About the Book of Proverbs
Proverbs runs 31 chapters and 915 verses, mostly short, standalone wisdom sayings rather than a single continuous narrative -- which is part of why it lends itself so well to a random roll: pulling one verse out of context is close to how the book is meant to be read anyway, a proverb at a time. The book opens (chapters 1-9) with longer extended discourses on the value of wisdom, then shifts into the dense, one- or two-line sayings most readers associate with the book, and closes (chapter 31) with an acrostic poem. This site does not sort or tag proverbs by theme within this roller -- for that, see the curated Wisdom topic page, which draws on verses from across the whole Bible, not only Proverbs.
How the roll works
Scoped to a single book, every one of Proverbs' 915 verses has an equal 1-in-915 chance on each roll, drawn with the Web Crypto API's cryptographically-secure random number generator and unbiased rejection sampling. Rolling again excludes your last 10 results (a Fisher-Yates shuffle over the remaining pool), so 10 rolls in a row are guaranteed distinct. Want the full canon instead of just Proverbs? Frequently Asked Questions
Does this roll from the whole book, or just famous proverbs?
The whole book. Every one of the 915 verses across all 31 chapters has exactly the same chance of coming up, including the long-form opening chapters (1-9) and the closing acrostic on the "worthy woman" in chapter 31, not just the short standalone sayings most people picture.
Which translation is this?
World English Bible (WEB) — public domain, the same verse data as every other roller on this site, quoted verbatim.
Can I see the verses around a proverb, not just the one line?
Yes -- press "Show context" to reveal up to two verses on either side within the same chapter.
How is this different from the main Random Bible Verse Generator?
Same roller and randomness source, scoped to one book -- picking "Proverbs only" from the homepage's book filter gives you the identical result.
Every result here is drawn live in your browser with cryptographically-secure randomness -- nothing is predetermined, saved, or replayable. See the Terms.
