The whole canon, by the numbers

This edition of the World English Bible contains 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,098 verses in total -- 39 Old Testament books (929 chapters) and 27 New Testament books (260 chapters). Every number in the two tables below comes directly from this site's own copy of that data -- the same data every roller on the site draws from -- rather than being typed in separately, so a book's listed verse count always matches the size of the pool its roller actually draws from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 66 books, not more?

66 is the Protestant canon: 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books. Some other Christian traditions include additional books (the Apocrypha or Deuterocanon) that this site's data does not contain -- the World English Bible edition used here is the 66-book Protestant edition.

Are the chapter and verse counts exact?

Yes -- they're computed directly from this site's own copy of the World English Bible verse data, not typed in by hand, so they can't drift out of sync with what the rollers actually draw from.

Why might these verse counts differ slightly from a number I've seen elsewhere?

Different Bible editions occasionally number verses a little differently -- most often over whether a psalm's editorial heading counts as verse 1, or a handful of verses present in some manuscript traditions but not others. This site's total, 31,098 verses, is the exact count for this edition of the World English Bible; you may see a nearby but not always identical figure (commonly 31,102) quoted for other translations.

Can I roll from just one book?

Yes -- every book below links to a roller locked to just that book's verses, or use the homepage's book filter to do the same from the main generator.

What order are the books listed in?

Canonical order: the Old Testament first (Genesis through Malachi), then the New Testament (Matthew through Revelation), the order most English Bibles print them in -- not chronological order of when each book was written.

Every result here is drawn live in your browser with cryptographically-secure randomness -- nothing is predetermined, saved, or replayable. See the Terms.
